Why We Party

May 4, 2011

I love a good party. Don’t you?

Last week was a good party and I’m praying (yes, praying!) we throw a lot more parties. This might surprise you…why would a pastor pray for his church to get good at throwing parties? How do parties fit into the mission of the church? Here are a few reasons:

  1. Parties are made up of people…generally the more the merrier. When I think of parties I think of people, not what we’ll be eating or drinking or the game we will play.
  2. Parties are a celebration and Sovereign Grace Church has a lot of reasons to celebrate.
  3. Parties attract guests. Prayer meetings do not. Some people find this trend disappointing.  I don’t.
  4. Parties provide an opportunity to serve. You need a place to meet, food to eat, and fun to administrate.
  5. Parties make shared memories, which builds community.
  6. Parties encourage people to bless one another. I hope nobody is thinking “Let’s all get together to discourage Eric.”
  7. Parties combat loneliness. Friends on the periphery are drawn into the life of the church.

Sounds good to me – the work of the Lord should be a party = if we can’t help each other with joy, we shouldn’t even try.
